Dental Braces – The Tried-and-True Orthodontics Treatment

Dental Braces or Fixed braces have been the go-to orthodontic option for many years. They are a tried-and-true method for straightening teeth and correcting bite issues. While there are newer alternatives available, fixed braces continue to be popular due to their affordability, effectiveness, and versatility.

How Does Fixed Braces Work?

Small brackets are attached to the front surface of each tooth using a special adhesive. These brackets serve as anchors for the braces. A wire, known as the Archwire, is threaded through the brackets. It connects all the brackets and applies pressure to the teeth. In some types of braces, elastic bands (O-ring) or ligatures are used to further apply pressure and guide the movement of specific teeth. These bands are changed regularly during adjustments.

The Differences of Fixed Braces System

Here at Bangkok New Smile Dental Clinic, we offer 3 different types of fixed braces; Metal Braces, Ceramic Braces, and Damon Braces. Each of them has their unique advantages and disadvantages. See our comparisons in the table below;

Braces Treatment Step by Step

  • Step 1 – Contact us to schedule an appointment time with our orthodontist to discuss your braces treatment goals and options as well as treatment planning.
  • Step 2 – During your consultation, our orthodontist will make teeth impressions for study models and take X-rays for Orthodontic Analysis and Advanced Treatment Planning. This plan will outline the specific movements and adjustments needed to achieve the desired results.
  • Step 3 – Before your braces are placed, additional dental work, such as cleanings, fillings, or wisdom tooth extractions may be required.
  • Step 4 – Orthodontist bonds your new braces to your teeth and give you thorough suggestions on oral hygiene during your orthodontic treatment.
  • Step 5 – You will need to visit your dentist once a month dental braces adjustment such as having O-ring replaced (for metal braces) or wire changed/tighten as well as any other necessary adjustments.
  • Step 6 – Once your teeth are properly aligned as the treatment was planned, your orthodontist will remove your fixed braces appliances and make retainers for you. Retainers keep your teeth in their newly aligned position and prevent teeth relapsing.

Care for Your Fixed Braces

Proper care and maintenance of metal braces are essential to ensure a successful treatment outcome.

  • Avoid chewing on hard objects, such as ice or pens, as this can damage the braces.
  • Avoid sticky or chewy foods should be avoided, as they can get stuck in the brackets and make cleaning more difficult.
  • Have Teeth Cleaning Done: Teeth cleaning is crucial for preventing plaque buildup and tooth decay.
  • Brush Your Teeth Twice a Day: Patients should brush their teeth at least twice a day, using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.
  • Do Not Forget to Floss: Flossing should be done daily, using specialized floss threaders to navigate around the braces.
  • Visit Your Orthodontist: It is crucial to attend your orthodontic appointments so your orthodontist can closely track your treatment progress.

The choice between metal braces, ceramic braces, and Damon Braces will depend on individual preferences, orthodontic needs, and the recommendation of your orthodontist.
