What is Gingivectomy?
For people who have a “gummy smile” which makes their teeth look too short and only soft tissue needs to be removed, this is termed a gingivectomy (from gingiva which means soft tissue or gum tissue of the mouth) procedure. It is also necessary if the gum tissue has a poor position or contour or for improving the cosmetic appearance of the teeth. It may also be required in order to make a successful impression for a cast restoration. The soft gingival tissues will be modified, repositioned, or reshaped so that an impression or restoration can be placed. This gingivectomy may involve electrosurgery, a scalpel, or simply a rough diamond abrasion (all using anesthetic). We will select the method based on your individual circumstances. Healing time varies but a gingivectomy usually takes between 3 to 10 days.
Things to Know Before Having Gingivectomy Done
Before you undergo gum surgery, there are a few essential things to keep in mind. Gum surgery may result in wounds and the normal swelling that typically occurs after any surgical procedure. Therefore, it is very important to ensure that you do not have any chronic health conditions that might slow down the healing process. Also, inform your dentist about any allergies you have, especially concerning anesthesia or medications. The good news is that the wounds are small, they usually heal naturally within about a week. The even better news is that this healing process will not cause you to develop a fever or experience weakness. This means you can carry on with your daily activities without taking time off work or interrupting your routine. All you need to do is follow your dentist’s instructions diligently. Take the prescribed medication as directed and maintain proper oral hygiene. By doing so, you can ensure a smooth recovery process without any complications.
